| Flute Workshop 2003 from the 24th July to 26th July 2003 was a resounding success, and attracted 45 flute players, from Grade I to Diploma standard. The course was held in the idyllic setting of Royal Russell School, Croydon, UK. The course director was Susan-Mary Whittaker, the tutors were Ann Cherry, Alison Thompson and David Oliver. Malcolm Godsman was the resident pianist. The three day workshop was packed with flute choirs, masterclasses, individual lessons, musical games, aural sessions, sight reading sessions, practice tips and performance techniques. "I'm just mailing the flute list to tell you all that I've just got back from the Flute Course in Royal Russell School in Croydon, near London. All I can say is that it was fantastic. Susan-Mary Whittaker, the course organiser, was so hard-working, and got well-earned results. Everyone had an absolutely great time. I'm recommending the course to anyone in that area (anywhere near London) - or who don't mnd travelling (the course is non-residential). Don't worry if you think your standard or age inhibits you from going - it caters for literally everyone and everyone has a fantastic time. Thanks to Susan-Mary Whittaker, Ann Cherry, David Oliver, Jackie Cox and Thea Cramp and not to forget Paul Chilvers for a smashing time." Lloyd Stringer - Spalding, Lincs. UK
"I found the flute workshop a very motivating experience. I had the privilege of working with each of the flute specialists, which allowed me to develop different skills and create different effects with each piece of music. The chamber music sessions helped the group to communicate more effectively and create solutions to problems that occurred with the music. The masterclass was a nice idea as it gave each person the opportunity to practice a piece with the accompanist and then have feedback on how to improve further. I felt that the flute choir sessions were most enjoyable as they gave me the chance to work with a larger number of people, and the music was challenging but not threatening. I also thought that the informal concert was a good idea because it started to build confidence and get everyone used to playing in front of people before the main concert. From participating in the flute workshop, I gained knowledge and acquired new skills that could not really be taught in a lesson. I had the chance to work with new people to achieve a very pleasing end result." Vicky Joyce - Carshalton, Surrey, UK |
